Put The Kettle On is a huge 2021 Champion Chase contender and she will take all the beating if she turns up on the day. She issued a serious warning to her chief rivals Altior and Chacun Pour Soi last month. Looking an unlikely winner for large spells of the race, she ground out victory in the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham.
The six-year-old was entitled to need the run. She was making her first start since her shock 16-1 success in the Arkle back in March. Henry de Bromhead is a masterful trainer of a jumper and this mare jumps for fun. She backed up her Arkle success and should arguably be shorter than the current 8-1 for the big day in March.
Duc Des Genievres ran them silly from the front in impressive style and looked a winner a long way from home. It was good to see the 2018 Arkle winner right back near her best for new trainer Paul Nicholls. However, Put The Kettle On reeled her in in workmanlike fashion and showed a real touch of class.
Coleman could have a great season
Aidan Coleman was interviewed after the race and was quoted saying: “She’s gone very well, she’s got a massive heart. She hated the ground and was never happy the whole way. It’s a testament to her ability and attitude because it was a hard race. Since November [last year] she’d run only once, so she might have been a bit rusty. When I got on top she won well.”
“She’s value for more today considering the feel I got the whole way round. She’ll be there and in the money in the Champion Chase but whether it’s first or fourth I don’t know. She’s a credit to connections and I’m delighted to ride her.”
Vital track form
Course form is so important at Prestbury Park and Put The Kettle On is now three wins from three starts at the venue. Henry de Bromhead knows what it takes to win a Champion Chase. He was successful in the race with Sizing Europe in 2011 and with Special Tiara in 2017.
It is hard to know if Altior will even turn up on the day in March. He was a late non-runner in the Tingle Creek and it has been a long time since an 11-year-old won the race (Moscow Flyer in 2005). Politologue will be there to pick up the pieces again if the others underperform but Put The Kettle On should give us a nice cuppa to celebrate in three months time.
